Thinking about starting a smart home? One of the most essential pieces and simplest way to start converting your home/room into a smart home is using smart plugs. They’re probably the most universal and cost-friendly compared to other smart home devices and accessories. Here, we’ll be talking about the Amazon Smart Plug in particular.

The Amazon Smart Plug has become a very useful, effective and overall essential part of the home that I live in. It’s nothing fancy, but rather just a simple, plain device that does a darn good job and is very helpful in certain situations— like if your hands are full and you want to turn on the lights. Of course, the smart plug isn’t only limited to operate your lighting, it is almost limitless. It can come in handy for other devices and appliances such as your slow cooker, fan, etc. I find it most useful in my use of controlling my lamp light. If you’re a forgetful person or just happen to stay out late one night and don’t want to come home to a dark home/room, you can turn on your lights from anywhere you are as long as you have an internet connection.

Typically, smart plug users also have a smart speaker within their home/room. This helps expand the use of the smart plug by using voice command as the light switch (in the case you’ve connected it to your light). In my case, I have an Amazon Echo Dot which I got free with the purchase of Amazon’s Eero Mesh Wi-Fi Router (check out our post about it here). Normally, the Amazon Smart Plug sells for about $24-25 (pricy…I agree). However, as a first time user and owner of an Alexa device, I received a discounted price for the smart plug of just $0.99. Naturally, if you already have an Alexa device, having an Amazon Smart Plug would be convenient since it uses the same Alexa app on your phone. However, there are many other alternative, more cost-friendly smart plugs out there that work just about the same (like this one) aside from using a different app.

All in all, I think smart plugs are becoming an essential device in modern-day homes. There really is no downside apart from different apps, price, and brand quality. Smart plugs just expand and improve the overall home and occupant interaction. It can come in handy at unexpected times.
