The Philadelphia 76ers should trade Ben Simmons this offseason or as soon as possible. His recent performance isn’t the sole reason for this action, but this performance should only prove to the 76ers that Simmons does not FIT the team. The 76ers were the 1st seed in the eastern conference and lost to the 5th seed Atlanta Hawks. This is not to say the Hawks are a bad team, but the 76ers were a clear favorite to win this series. With a new head coach, Doc Rivers, and new supporting role players, the 76ers were dominating the regular season. However, the lack of aggression and leadership, Ben Simmons left the 76ers in a losing position.
Ben Simmons is a Star
To be clear, I’m not saying that Simmons is a bad player! Simmons’ playing style does not fit with his co-star Joel Embiid. Simmons strengths are defense and passing. His defense is always consist and the 76ers could always rely on him every night to play terrific defense. This year, he averaged 1.6 steals a game and during the 2019-2020 season, he averaged 2.1 steals a game! Defense in a game is important however, the issue is on the offensive end.
Simmons’ potential was compared to or was expected to become a Lebron James like player. A big forward player that can pass the ball like Magic Johnson. But, what makes Lebron and Magic different from Simmons is that they are aggressive and are potential offensive threats. Lebron is more than willing to drive to the basket and draw contact while Simmons always looks to pass before shooting. This makes Simmons’ passing obsolete! The defense knows that Simmons isn’t going to shoot the ball so, the instant he drives to the basket, everyone is already looking, not at the basket, but for an open three point shooter. This makes it harder for the shooters to get an open and clean shot when the defender is already 1 step ahead of the offense. Also, Simmons 6 foot 10 height and size is useless since he doesn’t have any post moves and doesn’t look to take any size advantage against the defense. Also I haven’t talked about his non-existent jump shot. Having a jump shot doesn’t make you a good player, but having the aggression and the potential option of a jump shot, would make Simmons’ passing ability way more effective than what it is now.
Many team are looking to make trades this offseason, so hopefully, the 76ers can move Simmons where his talents can be better used and get a more aggressive scoring guard in return.
We appreciate y’all for letting us be a part of your Break Time.
Signing off, JT
